How can I avoid accepting invitations from fake LinkedIn profiles?
I want to be an open networker but I also worry about the downside of doing that. How can I avoid accepting invitations from fake LinkedIn profiles? I'm sure LinkedIn is doing their part to minimize this problem but do you have any recommendations on how to spot fake LinkedIn profiles?

You would have to read and screen the invite you get to see if a person is real or not. Just like with everything in life, there are some "bad apples" that fall through the cracks on Linkedin, but in my experience, many people are geniune.
